Seminar - Environmental Management - Lithuania

Implementation of Environmental Management and Cleaner Technologies in the Lithuanian Fish Processing Industry

and

How you can save money

Why are Environmental Management and Cleaner Technologies important for the Fish Processing Industry?

The more than 100 fish processing plants in Lithuania are located all over the country and the effects of the manufacturing activities on the eco-systems – whether that is the Baltic Sea, the lakes, the rivers or the close by living areas are widespread and immense.

Cleaner technology, optimisation of resource consumption, implementation of Environmental Management and fulfilment of demands associated with protection of the environment in general and in line with the regulations imposed on the Industry in the EU have so far been badly neglected in Lithuania both by the industry and by the authorities.

Such neglect can within short prove to be a disaster for the industry. The costs of water, of energy and of treatment of wastewater are rising sharply and affect the cost calculations negatively and will lead to in-competitiveness and company bankruptcies.

Many companies focus on the nearby markets in Western Europe. An increasing amount of products manufactured by the Lithuanian fish processing industry will in the years to come – short and medium term – be offered to western hyper- and supermarket chains. The price will be decisive but the image of the industry as polluters of the environment may in these countries negatively affect the consumer’s interest in the products and thus negatively affect the companies sales and profitability.

Finally, non-compliance with the EU regulations may – when Lithuania becomes a member state – be an obstacle for some companies to future activity either for a period or permanently.

Introduction of cleaner technology, training of local institutional technologists in cleaner technology and design, presentation and implementation of an Environmental Management System for the Lithuanian fish processing industry as presented on this seminar will help to solve this latent problem.

The seminar will be held for the Fish Processing Industry and related Institutions on 23 January 2002 at Kaunas Food Industry College with the following programme:
